DISCO INFERNO - Spring 2010

St. Joseph, Michigan – Disco made a comeback during the Spring of 2010 at Lake Michigan Catholic.  Laker Drama took the story of Faust and brought it to life in an explosion of hit songs, high energy dance routines and glitter-ball spinning action with their spring musical “Disco Inferno”.

Picture this: London in the summer of 1976 and it’s as hot outside as the fashion, hits and moves are on the dance floor - the hottest summer ever recorded.  “Disco Inferno” told the story of an ambitious and talented hopeful, Jack Green and his ‘burning’ desire to make it in the music business at any cost.  Working late in the nightclub, also named Disco Inferno, Jack met Lady Marmalade - the right-hand lady to the Devil himself. Dreaming of becoming successful, Jack struck a ‘Faustian’ pact with her, trading his soul to fulfill his wildest fantasies.  Sound like an ideal bargain?  Think again...

Jack soon became an international success...a sensation - even traveling the Atlantic to make an appearance on American Bandstand - but success proves hollow.  He had the fame and fortune he'd ways dreamed of but lost something far more important - his devoted girlfriend, Jane... One disaster quickly follows another.  If only he could turn back time... If only he could make one more trade, trading all he has now for something far more important... the love of his life.

“Disco Inferno” is packed with over two dozen classic seventies floor fillers and is a musical celebration of the perpetual spirit of the decade that brought us flared trousers, platform shoes and more glitter than can be found in Liberace's wardrobe.  A hilarious script, fantastic characters and an electrifying score combine to create a high energy musical guaranteed to warm hearts and get feet tapping.  A show for all the family and whether it's your first experience of the life and music of the 1970's or whether you were there when it all began, this musical is a guaranteed hit...a night to remember and one not to be missed.

The cast included our principals: John Golob as Jack; Grace Smith as Jane; Chad Roden as Jack’s best friend, Tom; Jessi Hannapel as Tom’s girlfriend, Maggie; Patrick Pjesky as the disco’s headliner, Heathcliffe; Juliet Golob as his girlfriend, Kathy; Blake Edmonds as the disco’s DJ, Terry; Ian Sherwood as the disco’s owner, Duke; Janine Golob as Lady Marmalde; and Andrew Duris as music promoter, Nick Diablo. The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare

A classic tale of love, the younger Bianca has several suitors ready to marry her; the older Katherine has none. The problem is that their father will not let anyone marry Bianca until Katherine is married. The bigger problem is that Katherine has a very sharp tongue and scares most men away. That is until she meets Petruchio, a friend of one of Bianca’s suitors, Hortensio. Will Kathrine marry Petruchio? Will Hortensio get to marry Bianca? Will their father have peace in his house? A story of romance, comedy, mistaken identity and happy endings – but for who?

IF GILBERT AND SULLIVAN COULD SEE US NOW…

Lake Michigan Catholic Drama Club presented “Hot Mikado” an adaptation of the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta “The Mikado” with book and lyrics adapted by David H. Bell and musical concepts and arrangements by Rob Bowman. Set in Japan, the show featured a wandering musician named Nanki-Poo, looking for his true love, Yum-Yum who is about to marry her ward, Ko-Ko. What transpires is a lively tale that combines Gilbert and Sullivan's timeless style re-orchestrated using 1940s popular musical harmonies and arrangements in a wide range of styles, including jazz, blues, and swing.  Many of the songs of “Hot Mikado” have the same name and melody as in The Mikado, but often have a twist. For those of you already familiar with the show – just picture the Three Little Maids as The Andrews Sisters. You can see where we are going with this.

The music for this updated version of the G&S classic was provided by The Ed Bagatini New Swing Orchestra. Ed is returning to an old haunt with a new group of musicians including: Earl Schimmel on Drums; Tim King on Bass, Bill Yamokoski on Keyboards; Andy Kolosowsky on Tenor Sax, Chris Keech on Atlo Sax, Jay Crouch on Trumpet, and of course, Ed Bagatini on Trombone.

Hello Everyone...
It's Drama Time again.

We will be holding weekly Drama Club meetings for all interested students on Fridays at lunchtimes (middle school and high school) in the Drama Classroom (Room 215, over the gym). Everyone is invited to join us for lunch, improv, theater conversations, event planning, play watching and a whole lot more. It is highly recommended that you bring lunch on Friday, as you will be able to spend more time at the meeting; instead of standing in line in the cafeteria.

What does Drama Club do? We get together to share our love of theater through conversations, games, attending plays, working on plays and learning new things about theater and theater craft. We help with the two productions at the middle/high school and also with the production at the elementary school. We attend events and performances in the area. We watch videos of different styles in theater. We do improv for the fun of it and generally just enjoy the good company.

If this sounds good to you, please join us on Fridays. If you know someone else who might be interested; bring them along.

MS/HS Laker Drama  Spring 2008 "The Music Man"

In May, 2008, Laker Drama presented Meredith Willson’s classic “The Music Man”. An affectionate look at Smalltown, U.S.A. of a bygone era, “The Music Man” follows fast-talking traveling salesman Harold Hill as he cons the people of River City, Iowa into buying instruments and uniforms for a boys’ band he vows to organize – this despite the fact he doesn’t know a trombone from a treble clef. His plans to skip town with the cash are foiled when he falls for Marian the librarian, who transforms him into a respectable citizen by curtain’s fall. Perfect for all audiences, this award-winning, critically acclaimed Broadway classic is an all-American institution, thanks to is quirky characters, charmingly predictable dramatic situations, and one-of-a-kind, nostalgic score of rousing marches, barbershop quartets and sentimental ballads which have become popular standards. At times funny, warm, romantic and touching, “The Music Man” is family entertainment at its best.

The Crucible takes us to the Salem Witch Hunts in a version that is as historically correct as could be created with the information available. The fate of each character is exactly that of his historical model, and there is no one in the drama that did not play a similar, and in some cases exactly the same, role in history.

Come and join us as we recreate this classic in Laker Drama style.
