Minutes of Open Meeting
November, 19, 2008
Rm. 102 LMCMS
Meeting called to order at 7:02 by President Rusty Cutter.
Father Jacobs gave the opening prayer and Pledge of Allegiance.
Present: Bob Ballard, Dave Boelke, Rusty Cutter, Bill Grover, Debra Hermann, Dolores Landeck Mason, Father Jacobs, Monsignor Osborn, John Berlin, Jody Maher and Cindy Payovich.
Excused: Gerald Heath, Gary Bruce, Janet Ordiway
Previous minutes: The minutes of the October 16, 2008 meeting were approved (with noted corrections) as presented with a motion by Dave Boelke and supported by Bill Grover. Motion approved.
REPORTS
Pastors
Report
Father Jacobs: The flu shot clinic at the Parish Center was a big success.
Final interviews are being conducted with Lakeland for a visiting Parish Nurse.
Advent by candlelight is scheduled for November 20, 2008. Honor Society Mass is
scheduled for December 2, 2008 at 6:30. The White Bag Project (personal hygiene
items) were handed out at the Catholic Community Center. Christmas cards and
stamps are needed for the jail.
Mnsr. Osborn: No report.
President’s Report: Next meeting will be a December 1, 2008 work session. Possible topics are Strategic Planning, concepts of a Strategic Plan, our 5 year vision, Catholicity. The Diocesan Strategic Plan could possibly be used as a “springboard”; St. Augustine’s will also be looked at. After discussion it was agreed that the meeting time would be changed to 5:30.
ADMINISTRATION REPORTS
John Berlin: John reported on his experience with the accreditation of Michigan Lutheran High School. Details were shared about the arrival of Gerald Heath’s new son. Lake Michigan Catholic High School received a top 50 ranking once again. Over 300 schools apply for this honor. A congratulatory letter from the Bishop and Diocese was shared. There were 18 applications to the National Honor Society and 16 admissions. The NHS is following a new system which was explained. John reported they are looking into adding Biology and Chemistry as AP classes. Conferences were a success with 90% of Middle School parents and 80% High School parents in attendance.
Jody Maher: Jody reported a new gym teacher had been hired. Shawn Beach will also coach MS basketball and will be a great addition to our school. She thanked Monsignor Osborn for the Mary, Seat of Wisdom plaques he purchased for each room. The Christmas programs have been rescheduled to December 17 at 6:30 and December 18 at 7:00. All are invited to attend.
Cindy Payovich: Budget report was handed out; Cindy will review line items at a later date.
Janet Ordiway: On bereavement leave, report handed out, no discussion.
Gerald Heath: On maternity leave, no report.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
Development-Dede Mason: Committee meeting was held two weeks ago with Laker to Laker and Catholic Schools week being discussed. Parent surveys were discussed, as was the possibility of surveying Religious Ed parents to find out why they are not enrolling in the school.
Finance-John Berlin: The Bryan Lubeck concert raised approximately $1,008.00. The need to continue endowment issues was discussed.
Building & Grounds-Bill Grover: Mike Carl is helping with the grounds. New gym doors have been installed at the High School.
School Improvement-Carol Oehlhaffen: No report.
ASSOCIATION REPORTS
Laker Fun: No report.
Blue Tide: No report.
NEW BUSINESS
The subject of grants was discussed. There is work with the Berrien Foundation in this area and also looking into the Pokagon Fund.
Next regularly scheduled open meeting will be January 22, 2009 @ 7:00 pm @ The Rose Center. A closed work session will be held February 2, 2009 @ 5:30 @ LMCMS Room 102.
A motion was made by Dave Boelke with support by Bill Grover to adjourn the meeting at 7:45pm. Motion carried. Meeting adjourned by Rusty Cutter.
